Digital Convergence Continues to Hit Home

The latest findings from Ipsos Insight’s The Face of the Web study<, conducted in 12 key global markets, reveal that home entertainment and digital device ownership continues to break records. Forty-two percent (42%) more households in 2004 versus 2003 owned a standalone digital camera. Similarly, household MP3 player ownership saw an 80% year-over-year growth, with close to two out of ten households in the measured markets today owning a standalone portable MP3 player. Among other home digital technologies, DVD player ownership grew by 32% and continues to become commonplace in most markets, except in urban environments of India, Mexico and Russia where it’s starting to gain broader acceptance. Meanwhile, on average, close to one out of four households in the markets studied owns a digital video recorder (DVR). These important facts highlight two trends that have significant implications for content and technology providers.
